A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO GETTING A MASSAGE: WHAT TO EXPECT AND HOW TO PREPARE

Massage therapy is one of the most relaxing and rejuvenating ways to take care of both your body and mind. Whether you’re looking to relieve stress, ease muscle tension, or simply indulge in a moment of relaxation, a massage can offer a host of benefits. If you’ve never had a massage before, the experience may feel a little intimidating. In this beginner’s guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to make your first massage a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Choose the Right Type of Massage

There are many different types of massage, each with its own unique benefits. If you’re new to massage therapy, it’s helpful to know which type will suit your needs. Here are some of the most popular options:

  • Swedish Massage: This is the most common type of massage, great for relaxation. It uses long, gentle strokes to relieve tension and improve circulation.

  • Deep Tissue Massage: Ideal for those with chronic muscle pain or stiffness. It targets deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue using more intense pressure.

  • Aromatherapy Massage: This massage incorporates essential oils to promote relaxation and emotional well-being, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

  • Hot Stone Massage: Heated stones are placed on specific points on the body to relax muscles and improve circulation.

All Spencer’s therapists will ask you about your preferences for the session. At this time we welcome you to inform us as to any areas of tension or discomfort to determine the best type of massage for you.

Arrive Early and Relax

Arriving 10-15 minutes before your appointment will give you time to unwind in our lounge with refreshments and read some books curated by Samantha Hillman, a friend of Spencer’s. This is also a great time to ask your therapist any questions you may have about the massage or discuss any health concerns you’d like them to be aware of. Take this time to breathe deeply, let go of any stress, and mentally prepare for the relaxing experience ahead.

Communicate with Your Therapist

One of the most important aspects of your massage experience is communication. It’s essential to let your therapist know if you have any specific areas of pain, injury, or tension. Be clear about how much pressure you prefer—whether you like a light touch for relaxation or a deeper pressure to target tight muscles. If something doesn’t feel right during the session, don’t hesitate to speak up.

What to Wear (or Not to Wear)

Our massage therapists are trained to provide comfort while maintaining your privacy. You’ll be asked to undress to your comfort level before the massage, but you can keep your underwear on if you prefer. Fresh soft linen sheets will be used to cover your body, leaving only the area being worked on exposed at any given time. We are all about creating a comfortable environment for you.

During the Massage

Once the massage begins, close your eyes, relax, and focus on your breathing. The therapist will guide you through the session, and the experience will vary depending on the type of massage and your preferences. Most people find that they feel deeply relaxed and sometimes even a little drowsy during or after the session.

Remember, massages are meant to be a relaxing experience, so trust the process and allow your therapist to work their magic.

After the Massage: What to Expect

After your massage, you might feel a little lightheaded or tired—this is completely normal. Drink plenty of water to help flush out any toxins that may have been released from your muscles. Avoid intense physical activity for the rest of the day to give your body time to fully absorb the benefits of the massage.

You may also experience some soreness the next day, especially if you opted for a deeper tissue massage. This is a sign that the muscles are healing, and it should subside within a day or two.

How Often Should You Get a Massage?

The frequency of massages depends on your personal needs and goals. For general relaxation, once a month may be enough. If you’re dealing with muscle pain or stress, weekly or bi-weekly massages can be incredibly beneficial. Discuss your goals with your therapist, and they can recommend a schedule that works best for you.

We encourage you to book ahead of time as our calendar fills up quickly. Our staff at Spencer's are devoted to your guest experience. Call us at (212) 259 8232 or head on over to www.spencers.spa to book your next appointment.
